How to check a painting composition
Use composition overlays to examine focal placement, visual weight, and the movement between shapes. The aim is to test your intended design before investing more time in detail.
Upload your painting or reference and choose a simple overlay, such as Rule of Thirds or Center Lines.
Compare the focal area with the surrounding empty space and the weight on either side. Use Notan to simplify the light and dark masses.
Try a different overlay only when it helps answer a specific question. Compare the result with the visual balance you want to create.
A studio example
For a still life with a tall vase on the right, compare the visual weight of the vase with the objects and empty space on the left. Use Center Lines for balance and Notan for the larger masses. A centered subject can be intentional; the overlay does not decide the composition for you.
What to keep in mind
The golden ratio and rule of thirds are optional guides, not guarantees of a strong painting. Access to advanced overlays, exports, and painter reads depends on the unlock shown in the tool.
